At Portside Dental, we understand that dental emergencies can happen at any time, often causing a great deal of pain and distress. That’s why we’re committed to providing our patients with prompt and compassionate care.

Dental emergencies can range from a broken tooth causing minor discomfort to a painful infected tooth resulting in facial swelling, as well as dental trauma. What is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency includes a range of issues that require immediate attention to alleviate pain, prevent further damage, or save a tooth. Common dental emergencies include:

  • Severe toothache
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Cracked, chipped, or fractured tooth
  • Dental abscess or infection
  • Any facial swelling or trauma

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies can’t be ignored. If you need emergency dental treatment, contact us immediately, and we will do our best to accommodate your needs as quickly as possible.  If your emergency happens outside of our office hours, you can book an appointment online or leave a message for one of our highly trained dental team, who will call you back the next day and endeavour to schedule your appointment within 24 hours.

Steps You Can Take to Reduce Your Pain

Severe Toothache

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
  • Gently floss to dislodge any trapped food.
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication such as prescribe by your pharmacist
  • Avoid any hot, cold, sweet or acidic foods.
  • Contact your dentist as soon as possible for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Knocked Out Tooth

  • You can try to reinsert the tooth gently into the socket or store it in a container of milk or saliva and promptly seek dental care.

Cracked, Chipped, or Fractured Tooth

  • For a temporary solution for a broken tooth, you can use orthodontic wax or temporary filling from pharmacies to cover the rough area. However, this is only temporary; you must see a dentist ASAP.

Facial Swelling or Trauma

  • Apply ice or cold packs to your face or jaw for 10-20 minutes; repeat 3 times daily.

It’s essential to seek emergency dental care for facial or mouth swelling, which could indicate a severe infection, such as an abscess requiring urgent treatment to prevent complications.

While these steps may offer temporary relief, they are not substitutes for professional dental care. We strongly recommend contacting our office as soon as possible so that we can provide appropriate treatment and prevent further complications.
